"Smith's Acres LLC" is actually established by "Farmer Joe" and his wife Teri, with a lot of help from family and friends. As the saying goes, "We've come a long way, Baby!"
We moved to Idaho, so that Joe could go to Boise State University, where he graduated in 1978 with a degree in Horticulture.
We came back to Connecticut, with our first child, Stephen, and Joe promptly started farming. Smith's Acres began in Ledyard back in 1980.
We have expanded our offerings from strictly home grown produce, to a full line of fruits and vegetables, with
an emphasis on "CT GROWN".
Joe travels to the Hartford regional market several mornings a week. He also has close friendships and great working relationships with several of Connecticut's finest farmers. He brings the freshest fruits and vegetables direct from their farms to our stand.
Corn is picked fresh each morning in season.
Most of the annuals and hanging baskets are grown right on the farm, with our combination planters being Teri's specialty
We increased our perennial sales area this year, and the selection is better than ever. Danielle takes regular trips to a local nursery, where her expertise in flowering shrubs comes in handy. She hand selects all of the shrubs that we have for sale. Joe and I were both thrilled when our daughter, Kirsten, decided that she wanted to be part of our family business, and I'm looking forward to putting more responsibility into her hands. (Do any of you remember when she was in the playpen in the back of the stand in Ledyard?) We hope that our customers enjoy the "family" feel to our shop. It's hard to miss, as now not only does our granddaughter Olivia run around eating her weight in fruit, but the children of many of our employees are often "at work" with mom.
